(TNS) - Emergency Management officials in Norwich, Conn., are monitoring water levels in the city, as weather forecasts call for up to four inches of rain Friday.

Due to the threat for rising waters to impact the community, the National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch and Wind Advisory for all of New London County until 6 p.m. Friday.

"Wind expected out of South 20-30 MPH sustained with gusts up to 45 MPH. (Strong winds may blow down limbs, trees, and power lines. Unsecured holiday decorations may be damaged or blown away. Scattered power outages are expected," the National Weather Service said.

Acting director of Emergency Management in Norwich, Lt. Jake Manke said city officials are monitoring the levels for the Yantic and Shetucket rivers, and said he is monitoring the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's website and is keeping in constant contact with the local office for the Department of Homeland Security.

Manke said the Yantic River is considered to be at flood stage when it reaches nine feet, and said that it was, as of noon, at 3.7 feet. He said with four inches of rain expected, the Yantic River may not reach flood stage, but it is a situation being carefully monitored.

Manke added that residents should take appropriate cautions under the heavy rain conditions, including a recommendation to avoid downed wires, avoiding areas of Norwich prone to flooding, and advised against driving through standing water.

Manke said if any resident comes across a dangerous situation, to please call 911 and/or Norwich Public Utilities.
