Truck Hits Pedestrians, Cyclists Near World Trade Center Site and Memorial in New York City

Authorities are investigating the incident as an act of terror, according to NBC.

(TNS) - A driver entered a Lower Manhattan path for pedestrians and cyclists near the World Trade Center site and memorial in New York City, hitting people, according to police and multiple news reports.

"There are several fatalities and numerous people injured," the New York Police Department said on Twitter.

Authorities are investigating the incident as an act of terror, according to NBC.

The suspect shouted "Allah Akhbar," witnesses told police, CNN is reporting.   

Police shot the person who exited the vehicle, which looked like a rented Home Depot truck. The person displayed "imitation firearms," police said.

The suspect was screaming while exiting the vehicle, Associated Press reported.

The suspect is in custody, NYPD said.
