Wyoming CIO Bill Vajda Resigns After Less Than a Year

Wyoming CIO Bill Vajda has resigned from his position with the Wyoming Department of Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) within the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO).

His final day in the position was Jan. 13, Kayla Woods, chief of communications and government affairs for OCIO, told Government Technology in an email. This marks just short of a year of state service, as his first day in the role was Jan. 18, 2022.

Woods said Timothy Sheehan, who served as Vajda’s deputy, is currently serving as interim CIO. This isn’t the first time Sheehan took the reigns of Wyoming IT in an interim capacity. Prior to Vajda’s appointment, Sheehan served as the interim CIO following the 2021 departure of then-CIO Gordon Knopp.

Sheehan has over 20 years of experience in information technology, including time in the public, private and education sectors. He has also been with the state for more than a decade.

Prior to Vajda’s appointment to the CIO role by Gov. Mark Gordon, he served as the CIO of Alaska at a critical time, having been appointed in April 2017 to lead the state’s newly consolidated IT agency. He resigned from that role in August 2018. Vajda has served in various other government positions throughout his career, including as CIO for the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Woods noted that the state will be conducting a search for a permanent replacement.
