Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon has appointed Bill Vajda as chief information officer for the state’s Department of Enterprise Technology Services. He replaces Interim Director Timothy Sheehan.

Throughout his career, Vajda has held various government positions, including serving as the CIO for the U.S. Department of the Interior and the state of Alaska. In 2018, Vajda stepped away from Alaska’s IT agency for personal reasons.

Vajda has also served as the chief administrative officer and city manager for Marquette, Mich., a White House senior adviser during the Bush and Obama administrations, and CIO of the U.S. Department of Education.

Sheehan was appointed to the interim director role last May when Gordon Knopp resigned following a high-profile leak of sensitive health-care data. Knopp had been Wyoming’s CIO since February 2019.

Vajda officially starts in the role on Jan. 18.
