A new AI-powered career platform, Career Ready DC, promises to streamline the process of connecting district residents with employment opportunities.

It's no secret that AI technologies have been transformative in reshaping state and local governments' operations. And in hiring, the technology can be a powerful tool when used responsibly.

The platform was officially launched on Dec. 1 by Mayor Muriel Bowser, the DC Department of Employment Services (DOES) and Eightfold AI.

“As we explore the benefits and uses of artificial intelligence and how we can harness AI technology to streamline services, we are excited about this new opportunity to support residents by making their job search more efficient and equitable,” Bowser said in the announcement.

The free service aims to connect job seekers and employers based on applicable experience and skills. It includes personalized features to make the process of finding a job or qualified employee more user-friendly.

Officials say the technology also has the ability to reduce bias in the hiring process, while also creating custom resumes and suggesting jobs and new skills for applicants.

“We are not just building a platform but a pathway for residents to thrive and building a workforce that mirrors the diversity of our nation's capital,” said DOES Director Dr. Unique Morris-Hughes in the announcement.

The platform will initially be open to residents who are enrolled with DC Networks, DC’s job board site that provides 24-hour access to workforce development resources. Select residents who are enrolled will receive an email granting access to the portal. A DOES workforce specialist will provide one-on-one support to troubleshoot issues. The specialist will be able to track residents’ applications and send the recommendations every few weeks as to which jobs they might want to consider applying.

Residents who are not part of DC Networks may register at DCNetworks.org or in person at an American Job Center location.
