“Carol Burroughs assumed the interim director role upon John’s retirement,” a department spokesperson said via email. “She has been with the state of North Carolina in various IT leadership roles for the past 17 years.”
Burroughs will continue her work as assistant director to improve insights and deliver actionable intelligence, including working with more than 35 data programs and projects, such as North Carolina’s Health Information Exchange Authority.
She will also focus her efforts on streamlining records and data across disparate systems to improve citizen outcomes and assist with various data efforts to support the state’s COVID-19 response.
As for her new role, Burroughs will assume Correllus’ previous responsibilities.
“John had served as deputy state CIO and chief data officer for North Carolina since April 2016,” the department's spokesperson said. “He helped grow and shape how the state leverages its data assets to support informed decision-making. He also focused on expanding and integrating analytics into agency business strategies and business intelligence initiatives.”
Before serving as CDO, Correllus worked as an IT strategic sourcing director with the state and served as CIO for the Office of State Human Resources. He also worked as a GIS manager and business intelligence director within the North Carolina Department of Commerce.
Before joining state government, he worked in the private sector, developing GIS solutions for government and private-sector clients.
