Megan Smith Named Federal CTO

The White House officially named Google's Megan Smith as its new chief technology officer.

Megan Smith, previously named as one of the top candidates for the federal chief technology officer position left vacant by Todd Park, was today officially announced as taking the position. Smith will lead the White House on technology, data and innovation projects as an adviser to the president.

“Megan has spent her career leading talented teams and taking cutting-edge technology and innovation initiatives from concept to design to deployment,” President Obama said in a press release. I am confident that in her new role as America’s Chief Technology Officer, she will put her long record of leadership and exceptional skills to work on behalf of the American people.”

Before taking a role at the White House, Smith was a Google executive who co-founded such projects as Solve for X and Women Techmakers.

It was also announced that Alexander Macgillivray will serve as a deputy CTO. Macgillivray was general counsel and head of public policy at Twitter from 2009 to 2013, and is an active software developer.
