Colorado Partnership Aims to Help Businesses Use Public Data

(TNS) — The Colorado Secretary of State’s office partnered with the University of Colorado to teach a free, online course intended to help business-minded folks access and use public data to improve work decisions.

The Colorado Secretary of State’s Business Intelligence Center and the Business Research Division of the University of Colorado developed the class after holding several data workshops across the state.

“These workshops, that connect business decision makers, economic development leaders, and entrepreneurs with public data from government agencies have been successful,” a Colorado Secretary of State news release said.

In the 90-minute course, participants can learn to access state and federal data sources such as the Colorado Department of Revenue, Secretary of State, Bureau of Labor Statistics and others to find public information about state demographics, division of property taxation, building permits and beyond.

Once the data is located, the course intends to teach participants how to interpret and analyze the information through a step-by-step tutorial.

While the information is public, the news release said, the data can be spread out across multiple websites and formats, making it tricky to find and properly read.

“This data could help businesses with strategic planning, but historically it has been in many different places and formats, making it difficult for most businesses to use,” the Secretary of State’s news release read.

The course can be accessed on the Colorado Secretary of State’s website.
