(TNS) — Saline County will receive nearly $30,000 in grant funds to help with election security.

The $28,423.50 grant is from the Center for Tech and Civic Life and must be used to plan and operate safe and secure elections administration in the county.

Jamie Doss, county clerk, said her office intends to use the grant to purchase scanning equipment and software to process ballots that come back for signature verification, with more ballots expected to be mailed back this year.

"The amount of time and staff that it would take to verify those signatures is significant," Doss said. "I'm looking at using a scanner to do that signature verification for us to help alleviate that staff time."

Doss said this particular funding from the Center for Tech and Civic Life came from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

The county commission meeting also included:

  • A review of the county mask mandate, which remains in effect.
  • Approval of a Coronavirus Relief Funds Emergency Operations Grant application for Saline County Emergency Management to purchase laptops.
  • Approval of an Emergency Management Performance Grant to assist in the compensation of the Saline County Emergency Management Deputy Director position.
  • Approval of a bid from Wilson Security for the purchase of cameras for the Saline County Jail.
  • Appointment of three of the five members to the Public Building Commission.
