Brexit Vote Prompts Twitterverse to Nudge Texas to Secede

Tweets with #Texit have reached more than 50,000 users on Twitter; on other platforms, the hashtag has reached nearly 300,000 people.

(TNS) -- Twitter users did not waste time turning Britain's historic vote to leave the European Union into a social media campaign to get Texas to ditch the U.S.

The Texas secession movement isn't new, but the shocking Brexit vote spurred both people joking about getting rid of Texas and those who seriously want the state to secede to tweet using #Texit.

Tweets with #Texit have reached more than 50,000 users on Twitter so far today, according to social media monitoring tool Brand 24. On other platforms, the hashtag has reached nearly 300,000 people.

The conversation has gone beyond social media: The Texas Nationalist Movement's Daniel Miller called on Gov. Greg Abbott to host a similar vote.

"The win for Brexit opens the door for Texit by establishing, concretely, that it is possible to have an adult conversation on independence and letting the people have the final say," he said in a press release.

So, how about this: we let #texit happen. Then bring in Puerto Rico as State no. 50. Easy, no need to change the flag. Feels like an upgrade — Brandon (@BB_218) June 24, 2016
