Mike Hussey Is Utah's New CIO

Mark VanOrden is on his way out and Mike Hussey, one time winner of the Governor's Award for Excellence in Outstanding Public Service, will replace him.

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert announced Oct. 19 that the search for a new chief information officer was over. The replacement to Mark VanOrden, who will retire next month, is Mike Hussey, an IT manager and technologist who worked at the University of Utah, the office of former Utah Gov. Jon M. Huntsman, Jr., and the state.

“To know Mike is to like Mike," Herbert said. "He has great enthusiasm and an abundance of expertise. He will be a valuable member of my cabinet and will capably lead Utah in its delivery of digital services.”

Most recently, Hussey served as IT manager for the Utah Department of Technology Services. As CIO, Hussey will lead the department's cybersecurity projects and pursuit of improved efficiency, according to a press release from the governor's office.

“I am truly grateful for the opportunity to serve in this new capacity,” Hussey said. “Utah is well-known for its innovative e-government initiatives, and I look forward to working with Gov. Herbert to make Utah government even more transparent and more efficient.”

Some of Hussey's credits include helping to create the largest CD-ROM database network in the U.S., a central component of the University of Utah's research efforts. Hussey also helped set up audio equipment to stream live sessions from the House and Senate online. In 2013, Hussey was presented the Governor's Award for Excellence in Outstanding Public Service.
