Raleigh, N.C., CIO Departs to Lead Textile Company IT

D. Darnell Smith left his post in August to become vice president and CIO of Standard Textile, based in Cincinnati, Ohio. IT Business Applications Director Beth Stagner was named as interim CIO.

Raleigh, N.C.'s chief information officer has left civil service for the private sector.

D. Darnell Smith has accepted a position as the vice president and CIO of Standard Textile, an industrial textile and apparel company headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Smith served as Raleigh’s CIO for three years before his departure at the end of August. City officials named IT Business Applications Director Beth Stagner as the interim CIO.

City spokeswoman Julia Milstead told Government Technology the CIO job hasn’t been formally announced for qualified individuals to apply.

“The City of Raleigh doesn’t have a definitive timetable to fill the vacant position of Chief Information Officer,” Milstead said in an email. “Interested parties can monitor the City’s jobs website, where the recruitment process will begin once the vacancy is posted.”

While CIO, Smith helped deploy an ongoing five-part IT modernization strategy to boost efficiency and automation through technology, to measure service and to understand the level of demand across the city.
