(TNS) -- Comcast announced Tuesday it will expand its fastest fiber Internet network for business customers in Gwinnett County.

The company said the expansion of its 10-gigabit business network — to areas including downtown Suwanee, the Gwinnett Place Mall area in Duluth, the Gwinnett County Airport and the city of Duluth — should be completed by the end of the year.

Comcast, Google Fiber, AT&T and others have ramped up development of their fiber optic networks to bring increased speeds to communities across metro Atlanta as consumers and businesses demand greater broadband capacity.

Shawn Geagan, Comcast vice president of business development, said the company’s expansion “nicely supports” the county’s efforts to attract business.

In the arms race for industry, many metro Atlanta cities are doing battle to wrangle ever-faster Internet speeds that allow consumers and businesses to download and upload gobs of data in the blink of an eye.

“Today’s news is another important step toward keeping Gwinnett County a premier destination for businesses looking to relocate or expand,” Nick Masino, chief economic development officer of Partnership Gwinnett and a Gwinnett Chamber executive, said in a news release.

Charlotte Nash, chairman of the Gwinnett commission, said the county is excited about the expansion.

“We hope that this is only the beginning of more robust networks across Gwinnett,” she said.
