California Secure IDs

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) recently unveiled new drivers’ licenses and ID cards equipped with the latest in document security technology and several features to protect against fraud, tampering and counterfeiting. The new ID features a different layout for persons under 21 and a 2-D bar code on the back that replicates and verifies the information on the front of the card (similar to the current magnetic stripe). But the high-tech IDs, spurred by the 2005 federal Real ID Act, are so complicated that even the company tasked with creating them is having design difficulties.
