Using Big Data for Dog Mapping in NYC

Using data from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, public radio station WNYC has mapped the names, addresses and breeds of nearly 100,000 canines in the city -- not only the popular breeds in each neighborhood, but also the most popular names.

Out of almost 100,000 registered dogs in the city, the most common breed in town is a mutt; the most popular name is Max, WNYC reported. And in the Upper West Side, SoHo, the West Village and Park Slope, Labradors are the most popular purebred dogs.

In researching to map breed and name information, the news outlet was told that only about one out of five dogs in New York City has been registered with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, which runs the dog licensing program -- a penalty that results in a summons and a $200 fine.

Great! All the dog thieves have a prepared shopping list with all the information needed to get just the dog I want. And the burglars know where the dogs aren't in case I need some more stuff.

Even better, match this up with the who's got a gun map and the only thing you have to worry about now are kitchen knives and baseball bats.
