How many miles of driving in Washington, D.C., are avoided each year thanks to the Capital Bikeshare program?

June 19, 2012 By

Answer: 5 million miles

A new survey of Washington’s Capital Bikeshare program says four in 10 users report using cars less — for an average annual savings of 523 miles for each of those users, which translates to a total of 5 million miles yearly not driven, according to survey authors. Most of the trips (56 percent) were for non-work purposes, and more than half of respondents used bike share as a feeder to reach transit stops.

Instead of relying on surveys of what people said they did, why aren't there odometers on the bicycles so we have direct data about the number of miles the bicycles were used. Each of those miles could then be inferred to be a mile that would have been otherwise traveled, driving, bus, taxi, etc. Maybe some would have been walked.
