New Colorado Secretary of Technology and CIO

Kristin Russell, former Oracle vice president, appointed by Gov. John Hickenlooper.

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper announced Thursday, Feb.3, that he has appointed Kristin Russell as the state’s new secretary of technology and CIO. She is currently the vice president of global IT service operations at Oracle and has more than 15 years of relevant work experience.

A Colorado governor has not appointed a secretary of technology since former Gov. Bill Owens appointed Marc Holtzman — the first secretary of technology in Colorado’s history — to the position in 1998, according to the Denver Post. It is undetermined when Russell will start her new positions.

In her role as CIO, Russell will oversee statewide information systems functionality and plans to improve the state’s use of shared information and technology. In conjunction with the state’s Office of Economic Development and International, Russell will assist with promoting Colorado as a headquarters location for new technology companies and work to attract large technology companies to relocate there.

“Kristin Russell understands what technology companies need and how they fit into our state’s economic recovery,” Hickenlooper said. “Colorado has one of the highest concentrations of technology workers outside of Silicon Valley. Kristin will play a key role in our efforts to attract and expand our technology sector while also streamlining and improving technology services in the state.”
