Napolitano Appoints Special Advisor on Immigration and Customs Enforcement

February 4, 2009 By

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano today announced the appointment of Dora Schriro as a Special Advisor on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Detention & Removal. This is a new position created by Secretary Napolitano to focus exclusively on the significant growth in immigration detention over the last five years, and to focus on the arrest priorities at ICE.

ICE has recently been criticized for shifting its arrest focus from dangerous criminals and potential terrorists to ordinary immigration violators while continuing to report to Congress that the agency was pursuing the most dangerous delinquents. Conditions at detention facilities have also received scrutiny.
