Lima, Ohio, to Take Final Vote on Creating Citywide IT Department

The City Council has one more chance to pass legislation that would establish an enterprise technology department that would oversee all major tech projects undertaken by the City of Lima.

TNS — Lima, Ohio's City Council has one more chance to pass legislation that would establish an enterprise technology department that would oversee all major tech projects undertaken by the city.

The issue has been a contentious one among city councilors due to concerns of cost and the mayor’s role in the appointment process. Prior votes have ended in 4-4 deadlocks with little compromise between the two sides, and Monday’s meeting will feature the third and final vote. If it fails to pass, the ordinance as is will be abandoned.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the tech department is dead in the water if the ordinance fails. Rather, new legislation would have to be crafted and introduced.

The creation of a tech department has been the latest effort of a Smart City initiative meant to streamline the city’s technology infrastructure and improve city services provided to Lima residents. Earlier efforts have upgraded the city’s water billing system to be available online.

Other projects on the city’s tech agenda include enhancing the city’s online portal and redesigning the city’s website.
