Shrinking Oil Revenue Drives Cloud Interest in Alaska

CIO Jim Bates expects to rely on the state's private cloud infrastructure for at least the next five years -- but plans for expansion are in the works.

Alaska invested heavily a few years ago to create a private cloud that supports state agency computing needs, said state CIO Jim Bates, in an interview with Government Technology at the 2015 NASCIO Midyear Conference. Bates expects to rely on that private cloud infrastructure for at least the next five years, but he’s also creating a road map for greater use of commercial cloud services as Alaska copes with shrinking oil revenue.
