Uber Hits Halfway Point in Goal to Get 12,000 Los Angeles Drivers on the Road

On Thursday, leaders from Uber and the city celebrated the milestone.

(TNS) -- Uber’s almost to its destination – but this time it’s not a place. It’s a destination.

Uber Technologies on Thursday celebrated reaching its halfway goal of 6,000 new driver-partners in six months as part of its Work on Demand Initiative with Los Angeles City Councilman Bob Blumenfield, Goodwill of Southern California, Youth Policy Institute, The Council of Mexican Federations in North America (COFEM), West Valley Boys & Girls Club and other local community organizations.

Uber hosted Los Angeles’ first Work on Demand event in March with the commitment to bring 12,000 new driver-partners in 12 months across the Southland – from South and East Los Angeles to Crenshaw and Pacoima. Last month, Uber achieved its halfway goal.

On Thursday, leaders celebrated the milestone in Canoga Park.

“Uber’s commitment to reach thousands of people in Los Angeles and provide them with work opportunities has made a real difference in communities in my district and across the City,” said Blumenfield in a news release for the event. “The ‘innovation economy’ is changing the nature of work and provides flexibility that helps students, parents, retirees, and anyone who can meet qualifications to work on their own schedule. I’m encouraged by outreach efforts like these to create jobs and foster an entrepreneurial environment that is vital to the health of our City.”
