Google to Fund Metro Detroit Teacher Projects

In all, more than 280 projects from Macomb, Oakland, Wayne and Washtenaw counties will be funded by Google -- at a cost of about $240,000.

Nearly 300 teachers across metro Detroit got a welcome surprise: The projects for which they were seeking donations are going to be funded by Google.

Google and DonorsChoose.org made the announcement the afternoon of Sept. 23 during a surprise assembly at Michigan Technical Academy in Detroit.

DonorsChoose is a web site where teachers can ask for donations to pay for books, art supplies, technology or other resources they need for their classroom, as well as activities such as field trips. The projects can remain on the web site for four months.
