Google and DonorsChoose.org made the announcement the afternoon of Sept. 23 during a surprise assembly at Michigan Technical Academy in Detroit.
DonorsChoose is a web site where teachers can ask for donations to pay for books, art supplies, technology or other resources they need for their classroom, as well as activities such as field trips. The projects can remain on the web site for four months.
In all, more than 280 projects from Macomb, Oakland, Wayne and Washtenaw counties will be funded by Google -- at a cost of about $240,000.
Here are a just a few of the projects from metro Detroit posted on the DonorsChoose web site today:
- A teacher at Pontiac Academy for Excellence is asking for $735 for basic supplies such as notebooks, crayons, scissors and pencils.
- An Oak Park Preparatory Academy teacher is asking for $623 to purchase poetry books.
- A teacher at Success Mile Academy in Warren is asking for $273 to purchase hands-on science materials.
- A Clintondale High School teacher is seeking $1,528 to purchase five Chromebooks for a math lab.
- A Michigan Technical Academy teacher is seeking $596 to purchase five ball chairs for students to use for small-group reading instruction.
- At Global Tech Academy in Ypsilanti, a teacher is asking for $513 for a classroom carpet.
