Cleveland State Is Taking Over Cyber Research and Training Alliance

The newest cybersecurity alliance is coming from a partnership between Cleveland State University, Case Western Research University and Erie, Pa. based Mercyhurst University.

(TNS) — CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State, Case Western Reserve and Mercyhurst universities have formed the North Coast Cyber Research and Training Alliance to develop cybersecurity education, research and training programs in western Pennsylvania and Northeast Ohio.

While each institution maintains nationally recognized programs in cybersecurity, the schools said in a joint statement that the agreement will leverage the combination of strengths of the three:

Cyber intelligence threat analysis and analytics: Ridge College of Intelligence Studies & Applied Sciences at Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pa..

Cyber engineering and hardware solutions, Case School of Engineering at CWRU.

Cyber regulatory and policy analysis, Center for Cybersecurity and Privacy Protection at CSU's Cleveland Marshall College of Law.

"The alliance opens the door to a variety of intriguing projects and new funding opportunities that will enable students to confront authentic problems across the full range of cyber disciplines," Caleb Pifer, vice president for external relations and advancement at Mercyhurst, said in the news release.

A cybersecurity lab and network-operations center, funded by Cleveland-based national technology company MCPc, is being built at Mercyhurst. The lab will support two new master's programs in cyber security and cyber-risk management.

"We are pleased to contribute our strengths in legal technology and policy to the new alliance," Lee Fisher, dean of CSU's law school, said in the release. "The collaboration will prepare students for a cyber workforce in which complex problems will need to be solved at the intersection of disciplines and sectors."

The multidisciplinary collaboration provides the expertise required to address complex cybersecurity concerns across a variety of application areas, Ken Loparo, the Nord professor of engineering in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at CWRU, said in the release.

"Case Western Reserve's Case School of Engineering provides expertise in the security of embedded devices and wired/wireless networks, secure-cloud computing and systems-level operational security for cyber-physical systems," he said.
