How to Help: Hurricane Matthew Leaves Need for Food, Money, Blood Donations

There is also an urgent need for both blood and platelet donations across the nation.

Red Cross (2)1
(TNS) - Anson County residents looking for a chance to help victims of Hurricane Matthew have a variety of options even through local groups.

BOOK BAGS FOR STUDENTS

School counselors began a book bag collection to send school supplies to students living in areas affected by the hurricane.

Janet Kendall, a counselor at Anson High School, said on Oct. 13 that she was unsure of the bags’ final destination, but that they would be delivered to school children.

“I don’t know if they will identify specific schools or deliver them to a district office and they’ll decide from there,” she said. The counselors are primarily seeking bags, but will take supplies packed within the bags, as well.

Book bags can be dropped off with school counselors at Anson High School, Anson New Technology High School, Anson County Early College, Anson Academy, Anson Middle School, Ansonville Elementary School, Lilesville Elementary School, Morven Elementary School, Peachland-Polkton Elementary School, Wadesboro Elementary School and Wadesboro Primary School.

Those with questions can call the counselor at the school where they will drop off the supplies.

The deadline to drop off book bags and supplies is Oct. 20.

BLOOD AND PLATELETS

There is an “urgent need” for both blood and platelet donations across the nation, according to Alyson Barraza, an external communications manager for the American Red Cross.

Hurricane Matthew forced about 100 American Red Cross blood drives to close in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Virginia.

“That resulted in more than 3,100 uncollected blood and platelet donations in that area,” Barraza said via email. “Right now, blood products are being sent out to hospitals as quickly as they come in across the U.S. We certainly encourage those in areas not affected by the storm to make an appointment to donate.”

Barraza encouraged those interested in donating to call 1-800-RED-CROSS to learn about the closest upcoming blood drives, or to go to make an appointment at redcrossblod.org.

MONETARY DONATIONS AND SUPPLIES

Robbie Hill, owner of Four Loader Trucks, LLC. in Wadesboro began collecting donations on Oct. 10. Hill will accept both supplies and monetary donations and will deliver the supplies to areas suffering from the affects of the storm, including Robeson County.

To help, contact Hill at 704-695-4721.

VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATIONS

Rodney Diggs, Anson County Fire Marshall and Emergency Services director, suggested that county residents interested in donating visit ncvoad.org/cms.

The link belongs to the North Carolina Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster, which maintains a list of volunteer organizations where donations can be sent.
