(TNS) - More than 1,000 animals found in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey are being shuttled to shelters across the state in an effort to save their lives or possibly reunite them with their owners.

In a makeshift tent city along Interstate 10, hundreds of volunteers, including from Austin Pets Alive, have spent several days processing and cleaning the animals. The animals, many found roaming the streets during the floods, are being sent to animal groups and shelters across the state to be adopted.

The effort, spearheaded by the Austin group, includes Central Texas veterinarians who made made the trip to the Houston suburb to help.

Base camp for the effort has been stationed in a parking lot outside an outlet mall. Dozens of tents are being used to shield the animals from the sun. Thousands of bottles of water and bags of animal food, along with scores of animal crates, have been taken to the site while the animals are being processed.
