Nor'easter Brings Blizzard Conditions to York, Cumberland Counties

Snow started falling before dawn Tuesday in York County Pa., part of a potentially crippling storm stretching from Washington, D.C., to Maine that will affect tens of millions of people by the time it moves out of the Northeast on Wednesday.

(TNS) - York and Cumberland counties are under a blizzard warning as a massive nor’easter arrives in Maine with blustery winds and snow.

Snow started falling before dawn Tuesday in York County, part of a potentially crippling storm stretching from Washington, D.C., to Maine that will affect tens of millions of people by the time it moves out of the Northeast on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service placed all of coastal New Hampshire, York County and Cumberland County under a blizzard warning for Tuesday, meaning severe winter weather could create whiteout conditions that make travel extremely dangerous.

Meteorologist Andy Pohl said a band of snow was bringing about 2 inches to 3 inches of snow per hour.

“We’ll pick up the majority of our snow between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.,” Pohl said.

Shortly before 6 p.m., Central Maine Power Co. was reporting 20,389 customers without power, 18,079 of them in York County. Kittery had 5,538 outages – most of the town’s 6,264 customers – and York had 4,969.

Most of Maine is expected to get 12 to 20 inches of snow by the end of the storm, with some isolated areas in York and Cumberland counties looking at the possibility of 12 to 24 inches, according to the weather service.
