A 'Perfect Storm' of Weather Enabled Fort McMurray Fire

Unusual weather conditions are becoming more normal.

Record rains/snow, lack of rain, and heat have become much more typical of the weather systems impacting North America.

When we look at events in the province of Alberta Canada, we see the results of those weather conditions colliding to provide an unseasonable mix of high fire danger due to unprecedented weather conditions, which included warmer-than-normal temperatures and a long-term lack of rain. Timing of the tree leaf-out was also a factor.

For the details on what led up to the Fort McMurray devastation, see How a weather ‘triple whammy’ enabled the Fort McMurray fire.
