California is Overdue for a Big One

Recent developments might be a precursor.

There has been a bunch of very small earthquakes near the south end of the An Andreas Fault; see Risk of big earthquake on San Andreas fault rises after quake swarm at Salton Sea.

Swarms of small earthquakes are not that unusual, and they don't necessarily mean a big one is coming, but they could lead to something bigger. If nothing else it is a good reminder for everyone; citizens, elected officials, emergency managers and businesses to dust off their earthquake response and recovery plans. I noted that the above article mentions the potential cost of a full rip San Andreas earthquake being estimated at $200B. Which would easily be the most costly disaster in the history of the United States.

The Great Shakeout is an earthquake drill scheduled for October 20, at 10:20 a.m. This is now an entire West Coast event with Oregon and Washington states also participating.

It would be great if the "Big One" held off until October 21st, that way folks would have an opportunity to practice before an actual event. I expect the most recent seismic activity might engender a bit more participation in the upcoming Shakeout.
