Disasters by the Numbers

Disasters collect their toll in lives and property damages.

I got the following numbers off of www.disasterWeb.net.

Even if they are little bit out of whack, depending on their sources, it is a sobering list to contemplate. They don't have tsunamis or earthquakes on the list. And, with climate change impacting drought (the number they have must be an estimate) I expect deaths to go up even further.

  • Average Number of Deaths from Earthquakes per Year:
    13,298
  • Average Flood Damage Claim, $42,000
  • Average Number of People Killed Each Year by Volcanoes, 869
  • Average Number of Tornadoes per Year in the US, 1000
  • Average Number of Structures Lost per Year due to Wildfires, MORE THAN 2,600
  • Average Number of Lightning Deaths per Year in the US, 49
  • Average Number of Hurricanes per Year, 85
  • Number of Deaths Due to Drought Since 1900, 11 Million
