(TNS) — The Federal Emergency Management Agency said funding is available to eligible, private nonprofits to help recover from damage caused by the Kona-low floods from March 10 to 24.

FEMA’s Public Assistance program is available to private nonprofits, including houses of worship, in Honolulu, Maui, and Hawaii counties.

The funding can be used to reimburse nonprofits for the cost of emergency protective measures, debris removal and restoring disaster-damaged roads, bridges and public facilities, FEMA officials said in a news release.

Nonprofits that provide critical or essential social services — including homeless shelters, hospitals, medical treatment facilities, places of worship, and senior citizen, community and assisted-living centers — that sustained damages should for public assistance. The deadline to file a request in the City & County of Honolulu and Hawaii and Maui counties is Thursday.

Honolulu, Hawaii island and Maui County residents, meanwhile, may be eligible for FEMA’s Individual Assistance program if they were affected by the March 10 to 24 Kona-low floods. Under President Donald Trump’s Major Disaster Declaration, FEMA’s Individual Assistance program is available to help eligible individuals and households with basic, disaster-related needs not covered by insurance or other sources.

“If you have homeowners’ or renters’ insurance, you should file a claim as soon as possible,” FEMA officials said. “By law, FEMA cannot duplicate benefits for losses covered by insurance. If your insurance policy does not cover all your damage expenses, you may be eligible for federal assistance.”

The deadline to apply for FEMA Individual Assistance is June 14. Eligible residents can apply by calling FEMA’s toll-free hotline at 800-621-3362 (800-621-FEMA), visiting, or using the FEMA app on a smartphone or tablet.

FEMA specialists are also available at local recovery centers to help residents apply for assistance, including at the Waialua Courthouse, KEY Project in Kaneohe, the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, and Hauula Civic Center on Oahu. FEMA will be at the BYU Hawaii Ballroom in Laie from 1 to 8 p.m. on Friday.
