FirstNet: A Quick Summary

In case you have not been paying attention.

FirstNet has been chugging along for a number of years and many have been thinking, "I'll pay attention when I see 'the whites of its eyes.'" That will be the point when I believe this is real and I need to start paying attention.

As I've written about previously, that day is getting closer, and it is time to start taking notice. It is expected that a vendor will be selected late this year and plans for each state and territory will begin to be written shortly after that in early 2017. This article FirstNet for first responders is a good quick summary of the what and why for this new system.

One thing this piece points out is that the Internet of Things (IoT) is also coming closer, and FirstNet and wireless connectivity will be key to maximizing what IoT can do for first responders.

The bottom line is that love it or hate it, it is time to be understanding what FirstNet will be able to do for you and your agency. Choices will need to begin being made in 2017 and you need to be fully informed about what your options are and what the future will hold for wireless digital connectivity.
