FirstNet in the News

News coverage on FirstNet.

The development of FirstNet continues to "cook along" with the stew still simmering on the back burner. The latest update is that the announcement on the selected vendor to develop and deploy FirstNet nationally may be delayed to the end of this year.

Here in Washington state we continue to have events that coordinate with public agencies on the use of FirstNet with the goal to make it as user friendly and supportive as possible of users of the system.

On Thursday of this past week we had an event that was a discussion on "pain points" of our current digital wireless systems and what is needed to make the future wireless FirstNet system address some of those pain points.

There was some news coverage of FirstNet at the above event, see KIRO 7's item. The title line is misleading, but that is to be expected when someone else writes the headline and this is such a new system. FirstNet will be the wireless services used 100 percent of the time by those who "opt in" for using it.

One of the key points of wireless system is the use of apps by different disciplines. The next event we have on the docket is what we are calling an AppFest. It is described this way:

You are invited to the upcoming 2016 AppFest workshop focused on software tools used today by first responders and emergency managers. Smartphones and tablet computers have changed the way first responders use technology to carry out their public safety mission. Applications run on those types of devices are starting to play a significant role in public safety. At the 2016 AppFest, practitioners and app developers will have the opportunity to share best practices and learn about new apps in use today.

If you are here in Washington state and are interested in attending, you can register here.
