A Resource for Emergency Management Careers

A new resource provides a basic guide to careers in emergency management.

I get requests all the time about how to break into the emergency management career field. As the profession becomes better known you can expect that children might even aspire when they are in grade school to become not just a firefighter or police officer, but even an emergency manager.

One resource that was just shared with me is Emergency Management Careers: A Guide to Training Options and Degree Programs.

Quoting from the guide, "According to the United States Department of Labor-Bureau of Labor Statistics, emergency management jobs are expected to grow by 2,800, or approximately 22 percent between 2008 and 2018. Compared to the employment market overall, that level of growth is substantial."

Next week I am participating in a Homeland Security and Emergency Management Summit where I'll be giving a lunch presentation on career pathways in emergency management. Interest in the profession keeps growing, and I think climate change will continue to feed that interest in the future.

Eric Holdeman is a contributing writer for Emergency Management magazine and is the former director of the King County, Wash., Office of Emergency Management.
