Lowenberg was not only nationally known, but nationally active on many different issues, including homeland security. Even before 9/11, he led the formation of a Washington state multi-agency, multi-jurisdictional state-level committee on terrorism. It was that type of foresight that set him apart from many other leaders. He served multiple governors, and he had the ear of each one of them.
One of my messages to people when doing public speaking is that you can achieve immortality. You do that by sharing everything you know with others. In the end, you don't want to die having hoarded knowledge that someone else needed to become a better leader or citizen. I think Lowenberg tried to model that behavior.
