Increasing Your Knowledge About Canada

It is somewhere up north...I think.

What most Americans know about Canada could fit on a 3-inch by 5-inch postcard, in large print!

Canada is our largest trading partner. We share a common language (except for French down here), and the longest demilitarized border in the entire world. Canadians know everything about the United States but we, on the other hand, know very little about Canada. I plan to check out the new podcast highlighted below at the end.

The following information comes from the Canadian American Business Council (CABC):

“The 44th Canadian federal election is officially underway. On Sunday, Prime Minister Trudeau requested the Governor General dissolve parliament, and this week we’ve seen federal leaders travel coast to coast meeting with constituents and announcing their platforms. Canadians will head to the polls and their mailboxes next month.

“Meanwhile, in the U.S., the CDC has announced plans to begin administering COVID-19 booster shots to all Americans, eight months after receiving both doses of Pfizer or Moderna. While the Canadian government hasn’t proposed additional vaccines yet, provincial governments in Ontario and Saskatchewan will offer booster shots to select groups.

“Another month goes by with a closed U.S. border. This morning, the DHS announced it will extend the U.S. border closure with Canada and Mexico another month. The Editorial Board at The Buffalo News penned a piece on the need for the U.S. to match Canada’s reopening. We also joined Voices of Montana to discuss the impacts of the border closure and the need for bilateral cooperation.

“The Canadian government also announced new travel restrictions earlier this week. Passengers and employees on federally regulated planes, trains and cruise ships must be vaccinated, with no exemptions. Similar mandates are coming into force in a variety of sectors on both sides of the border as the Delta variant continues to spread.

“We had a great week in Big Sky at the Pacific NorthWest Economic Region Summit. It was a pleasure to host an Ambassadors Roundtable with Amb. David Wilkins and Amb Gary Doer, follow this link to watch our conversation. Thank you to those who joined us at the Canadian American Business Council Hospitality Suite, it was lovely to reconnect with so many of you. I was also very honored to receive the Founder’s Award. We at the CABC are so thrilled to be a partner of the Pacific NorthWest Economic Region Summit over many years.

“Are you listening to our new podcast Canusa Street? Each episode we explore a variety of issues, including the reopening of the border, the role of media in constructing our understanding of the bilateral relationship, the Gordie Howe Bridge and softwood lumber. Check us out on Spotify and Apple.”

Some of you might not know of my connection with the Pacific Northwest Economic Region (PNWER). I lead the disaster resilience effort there as director of the Center for Regional Disaster Resilience (CRDR). For the record, Big Sky, Mont., had a lot of wildfire smoke wafting through the region.
