The Color Code Warning System is Dead. Long Live NTAS!

Long the butt of late night comedy jokes, the color coded warning system has been discontinued.

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano today announced that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will discontinue the color-coded alerts of the Homeland Security Advisory System (HSAS) in favor of a new system, the National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS).  The old system was in place for nine years and will die a quiet death.  Crayola fans everywhere will morn its passing.

After existing with a threat condition of yellow or orange for most of the last decade we can now relax knowing that the federal government will tell us specifically when and what to worry about.  No more general threats--it will be timely and as I said, "specific" when and where possible.

I guess we'll have to see what NTAS really looks like when they roll it out over the next 90 days.  It will at least give us something new to try and figure out and communicate with our respective constituencies.  The page to go to when there is an alert is the NTAS web page

There is place there where you can register to get email alerts when there is an alert and you can follow them on Twitter(I'm the 216th follower).  At least they are using social media!

Will the system be any better than the last one?  That remains to be seen!
