the Really Big One, an article in the
New Yorker magazine found out that she had touched a nerve with people. To the point that she wrote a follow-up article (I'm assuming online) that lays out disaster preparedness information, see

That is a pretty good piece on disaster preparedness. The one thing I would have emphasized more is making a plan first, which then guides the rest of your preparedness activities.
