Jacksonville Police, Fire Reimbursed by FEMA for Dorian

The Federal Emergency Management Agency funds follow $1.855 million allocated to the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department for costs during the storm's Sept. 4, 2019, passage off the city's coastline.

(TNS) -Nearly $2½ million in federal aid is coming to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office to help it pay for work done during 2019's near-miss by Hurricane Dorian.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency funds follow $1.855 million allocated to the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department for costs during the storm's Sept. 4, 2019, passage off the city's coastline.

The program provides grants to state, tribal and local governments as well as some private nonprofit organizations to help recover from major disasters or emergencies. The Florida Division of Emergency Management works with FEMA during the program and conducts final reviews.

The latest $2.45 million allocation will help reimburse the city for Sheriff's Office barricades, evacuations, security and the staffing of emergency operations centers.

In March FEMA announced the fire department reimbursement for labor, equipment, materials and contracts to manage the emergency operations center. The funding will also repay the fire department for clearing downed trees and debris to maintain access to public roads, plus responding to fires and performing 791 evacuations, FEMA said.
