Nationwide Emergency Alert System Test

They could have used EAS on Sept. 11, 2001.

For some reason I don't recall having national Emergency Alert System (EAS) tests back when I was a local emergency manager. Maybe they were part of the regularly scheduled monthly tests and I just did not recognize them.

Anyway, a National EAS test is scheduled for later today, see Mandatory Nationwide Test of the Emergency Alert System. National tests are the only ones, as reflected in the title, that are required to be conducted by all broadcast television, cable and radio stations. Note that in other tests, the words "in voluntary cooperation" are often used in the language before or after the test.

One last note: Branding of the EAS is still an issue. Most people refer to the system as EBS (Emergency Broadcast System), which went away probably 20 years ago.
