New Space Weather Satellite is Coming Online

It will give us a one-hour warning.

It is not something that is top of mind for most emergency managers, but having all our electric circuits fried and being without electrical power for weeks, months and perhaps years is one of those low-frequency, high-impact events that we should be paying attention to.

See this article on the new warning system that will go into operation on July 27, New and improved space weather observatory goes live next month.

My question for you is, "What actions will you take in the 60-minute warning that is provided?" Will you further distribute the warning? What precautions will you tell people to take? What will you do to protect your own electrical gear? Is there anything that can be done?

In reality, the time for preparing is now. Investigate how you might protect your own communications and other electrical equipment. For the investment of not that much money, you might be able to mitigate some, if not all of the impacts.

You can sign up to receive space weather warnings at this site.
