Using Comics for Messaging Disaster Preparedness

An approach for communicating information

I think that any and all means should be used to try to get the disaster preparedness message in the hands of people. Today the Internet is dominant in that regard, and infographs are the latest fad, but good old comic books can also play a role.

Check out Without Warning!, which has the Cascadia Earthquake fault as the background for messaging. Based on the publishing date, this information and format have been around for two years, but I just recently came across a paper copy.

Both Cascadia Earthquake Workgroup (CREW) and Oregon Office of Emergency Management are in the credits.

Eric Holdeman is a contributing writer for Emergency Management magazine and is the former director of the King County, Wash., Office of Emergency Management.
