Few people understand the scarcity of land like those who live on an island. On the Big Island of Hawaii, Mayor Billy Kenoi doesn’t want to fill those precious few acres with garbage. Instead, Kenoi is pitching the idea of a 300 ton per day waste-to-energy facility. The County of Hawaii has issued an initial Request for Proposals seeking bids from the “the most qualified, most proven” waste-to-energy solutions providers.

"If we can take our waste that is currently being land filled and currently costing us over $125 a ton to manage, if we can turn that into a commodity and use it as a source of fuel and energy, now we’re reducing our dependence on fossil fuel, reduce the importation of fossil fuels; we’re creating more energy sustainability at home,” Kenoi said during a February 4, 2014 Hawaii County Council Environmental Management Committee meeting.
