Suffolk County Enacts Animal Abuse Offender Registry

Offenders’ names and addresses will be posted on a website for five years.

The Suffolk County, N.Y,. legislature on Dec. 3 revised and approved an Animal Abuse Offender Registry, which had been delayed since passage of a 2010 law. The registry will be run by an organization to be selected by the Police Department.

Anyone convicted of animal abuse must register with the Police Department and pay a $50 annual administrative fee, according to a local news report. Offenders’ names and addresses will be posted on a website for five years.

Louis D'Amaro, the legislator who sponsored the bill, blamed the delay on indemnification issues with the ASPCA, named in the original law to run the website. He hopes the county will release an RFP within 60 days.
