Thirty-five-year-old Jessica Savage’s call to the police only forestalled the inevitable, as police said they received three separate tips identifying her as the shoplifter.
As a result, Savage was issued a summons to appear at Newburyport District Court in the near future on a charge of shoplifting.
“The immediate push on Twitter and Facebook really helped us on this one,” Salisbury police Detective Keith Forget said.
According to police, Savage walked into the Salisbury Square CVS Pharmacy accompanied by a man around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday and left the store with $174 worth of cosmetics. Savage then fled in a car. Within minutes, Salisbury police posted a pair of store surveillance photos of her.
“She proactively called police. She was remorseful and she owned up to it,” Forget said.
Because of her confession, Forget said, he issued a summons on a single shoplifting charge and did not charge the man who entered the store with her. All items were recovered and returned to CVS.
Wednesday’s success marks the second time in 10 days Salisbury police have reunited stolen items to its owners using the power of social media. Hours after images of a stolen, custom-made motorcycle valued at $40,000 were spread across social media on July 27, the unique driving machine was back in the hands of its owner.
