Connecticut Struggles with Internet Outages After Storm

Electricity is working for many customers in parts of the state impacted by Tropical Storm Isaias, but power to Internet service provider networks has still not been restored in some places.

(TNS) — Internet access has been unavailable to some customers even as power was restored days after Tropical Storm Isaias tore through Connecticut, creating an anomaly of humming refrigerators and air conditioners while computer screens are dark and silent.

Terry Foley of Harwinton said she did not lose electricity, but her internet service was out since the storm Aug. 4 until Monday night.

“We had no clue to how massive it was,” she said. “We were thrilled to have power. Of course, no internet means a lot to us.”

She used her phone’s hot spot, limited by her low-data plan, for access to email.

Her internet provider is Charter Communications Inc., which provides consumer services using the Spectrum brand.

Lara Pritchard, a spokeswoman for Charter, said the “vast majority” of service interruptions were due to power outages. Technicians have been assessing and repairing damage to lines, most of which serve customer homes, she said.

Electricity may be restored for customers, but if power has not resumed at the part of Charter’s network that provides service, customers will not have service, Pritchard said.

Charter does not disclose the number of customers for competitive reasons, she said.

At the peak of the post-storm damage, nearly 1 million business and residential customers – most from Eversource and the rest from United Illuminating – lost power. Eversource has promised to restore all power by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday.

Frontier Communications said its broadband routers are designed to reconnect automatically when electric power is restored following a power outage. Customers should reboot their modem if service does not automatically reconnect after power is restored.

Martha Prou of Bloomfield said power returned Thursday, but restoration of internet service by Comcast promised for Sunday has been pushed back to Friday. She said she has access to the internet at work.

Calls to Comcast were answered by automated messages telling customers the telecommunications company it is working to restore service, Prou said.

Comcast spokeswoman Kristen Roberts said customers without power can use Comcast apps that provide local service updates and information.
