Cuyahoga County, Ohio, Deploys Survey to Find Internet Gaps

cleveland
(TNS) — Cuyahoga County is teaming with other organizations on a survey it hopes will help identify gaps in internet service for the county’s residents.

Measurement Lab, Marconi Society, and X-Lab at Penn State University is working with the Cuyahoga County Office of Innovation & Performance on the survey, which will be on the county’s website through November.

The survey allows residents to quickly perform an internet-speed test in their homes. Residents also can answer questions about their internet-service provider, how much they pay for service, and any issues they regularly experience with their service.

“Giving residents access to low-cost, high-speed internet is a key way to lift communities in Cuyahoga County,” County Executive Armond Budish said in a statement. “Along with the many other ways we’ve been bridging the digital divide for many years now, this will help us better determine, down to the street level, how to provide a connection to those who need it.”

About 19 percent of homes in the county lack in-home internet access of any kind, according to a news release. This creates various problems for residents, such as making it difficult for kids to do homework or for residents to apply for jobs.

“As we continue to navigate through the uncertainties of the pandemic, the stability of our local economy and continued opportunities for our residents rely on sufficient and dependable home internet access,” Marconi Society Executive Director Samantha Schartman said in a statement.
