(TNS) — The Atlantic County Library System will use a $24,500 grant to establish a digital literacy lab at its Egg Harbor Township branch, library officials said Monday.

The library system was one of five in the state to receive funding from the New Jersey State Library’s Expanding Digital Literacy grant program.

The digital literacy lab will host workshops and provide programs on job readiness, computer literacy and entrepreneurship training, in addition to one-on-one coaching, library officials said in a news release.

“By improving access to technology and digital skills training we can help our residents gain the competencies and confidence needed to thrive in an increasingly digital society,” County Executive Dennis Levinson said in a statement.

The library system also will be invited to join a statewide learning cohort to share best practices, exchange ideas and strengthen its capacity to deliver digital literacy programming, library officials said.

“It is virtually impossible to find a task or activity that doesn’t require the use of technology, the internet, or artificial intelligence, yet far too many lack the skills or access to technology that supports full engagement in education, the workforce, health care, and more,” said Jen Nelson, New Jersey state librarian. “Expanding Digital Literacy grants give libraries an opportunity to enhance and build their capacity to offer these life-changing tools and services.”
