Wireless Video Surveillance for Florida Counties

Systems are designed to intermesh

Five Florida Sheriffs' offices have been outfitted with tactical wireless surveillance systems from Viasys Network Services. The systems enable public safety to monitor live activity on-site and dispatch field agents by leveraging advanced wireless video technology.

Viasys worked closely with law enforcement personnel to customize a surveillance system that was both affordable and effective. Viasys' solution is a portable system that allows public safety agencies to temporarily install a combination of wide-angle and high-resolution cameras which connect over-the-air to wireless gateways. The live video feed is then transmitted to network monitors who scan and pinpoint incidents and respond appropriately in real-time. Individual counties will be in ownership of a single network, however, the systems are designed to intermesh with each other, allowing for a larger network comprised of two to five systems.

Each system is composed of several dual-radio wireless mesh devices and corresponding network management software, which provides the wireless network. Also included are multiple panoramic-view and high-resolution video cameras. The system can be customized to meet individual agency's needs, as well as access additional peripheral devices such as laptops, phones, sensors, or explosive detection devices.

Two versions of the solution had been publicly demonstrated for law enforcement officials, leading to refinements and authorization. While initially intended to be portable solutions, the system is ruggedized for permanent installation, if desired. The systems are to be fully functional in April 2006, in time for several springtime events.
