Continuous Access for Greenville, N.C. Mobile Workers

"Responsive government is Greeneville's top priority."

Nortel this week announced two customer agreements and wireless mesh product enhancements designed to provide solutions for mobile workers.

Nortel's solution, which includes wireless mesh and WLAN technologies, gives on-the-go users continuous access to critical personnel and information from both indoor and outdoor locations, which helps to lower operational expenses, increase worker productivity, and improve customer satisfaction through faster response times. The solution also supports SIP-based multimedia and collaborative applications such as video conferencing, instant messaging and file sharing.

Nortel's Wireless Mesh Network solution uses wireless links to connect access points installed inside or outside to provide secure, seamless access to wireless broadband services. It allows enterprises such as universities to install WLANs in areas where it is difficult or cost-prohibitive to run cables.

The city of Greenville, N.C. has purchased Nortel's WLAN 2300, which supports indoor Wi-Fi data, voice and multimedia services. Greeneville will use Nortel's technology to provide its staff with secure mobile access to the city's database and the ability to respond to constituent and community needs from any location within the municipality.

Nortel's WLAN 2300 series is designed to support delivery of high-quality voice, data and multimedia applications. Its scalability allows the mobility solution to grow as customers grow, expanding to encompass new users and applications while protecting the initial investment.

"Responsive government is Greenville's top priority, and the ability to stay in touch is a critical factor in ensuring we meet the needs of our community," said Rex Wilder, director of information technology, city of Greenville. "Mobility in communications helps ensure staff can respond quickly to constituents, even when they are out of the office and allows us to maximize taxpayer dollars by ensuring employees are as productive as possible, regardless of location."

"True mobility has become a valuable asset in today's information society as people increasingly expect their desktop capabilities to be available to them wherever they roam," said Malcolm Collins, president, Enterprise Networks, Nortel. "Nortel's mobile worker solution helps to replicate the office environment and increase productivity by allowing users to interact with their key contacts in real time and access their corporate networks from any location."
