Thales and Terabeam Wireless Meet New Security Requirements

New regulations are driving the need for security in wireless LAN applications. Presidential Directive 63 (PDD-63) and the Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) regulations are requiring government agencies to encrypt their wireless networks. Through the affiliation with Thales, Terabeam customers will have the ability to augment their wireless networks with Layer 3 IP security solutions or Layer 2 solutions without IPSec.

Thales' Datacryptor encryption devices offer hardware-based FIPS 140-2 Level 2 and Level 3 certified cryptography using the robust AES-256 algorithm for point-to-multipoint encryption over Layer 3 IP networks and bulk point-to-point encryption applications over Layer 2. While encryption of wireless connections at Layer 3 enables multi-tunnel routing over the IP network, encryption at Layer 2 provides single-tunnel point-to-point security with virtually no latency or overhead associated with IPSec routing. Datacryptor products offer wireless customers encryption flexibility as well as a wide selection of speeds (from 10 Mbps to 1.8 Gbps) to match specific applications, and connect directly between the wired and wireless network segments through standard copper or optical interfaces. The Datacryptor modules have been tested by the Army's Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC).

Terabeam's line of broadband wireless products includes the TeraMax OFDM point-to-point and point-to-multipoint systems, and TeraBridge, GigaLink and TeraOptic point-to-point links with speeds ranging from 16 Mbps to 1.42 Gbps. These solutions, with diverse characteristics suiting a range of network needs, have demonstrated that broadband wireless networking is a technically feasible option for government- and enterprise-wide IT systems. Terabeam's products offer flexibility and cost savings based on reduced operating cost, quicker installation cycles, ability to be deployed in geographically troubling areas, and the ability to rapidly make networking changes. By combining these products with the robust encryption of Thales' Datacryptor devices, customers can fully realize the operational efficiencies and cost reductions associated with wireless deployments, with the assurance that the data transmitted over the wireless infrastructure is protected with the strongest algorithms available commercially in accordance with the new federal regulations.

"Terabeam's products have a rich history of deployment within the federal government and state and local governments for a broad range of applications, and security is a critical concern for this part of our customer base," said Robert Fitzgerald, Terabeam Wireless' CEO. "The Thales Datacryptor is a powerful complement to our products - together we can deliver high-performance wireless networks with security to match."
